Winter is set to arrive in full force across western Australia this week, with strong showers and high winds forecast to lash Perth during the coming days.

Off the back off of some pleasant weather on Tuesday, the rain is forecast to be in full effect by as soon as Wednesday evening, with an expected rainfall of at least 10-15mm.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jessica Lingard says that there is a potential at this stage for it to be severe.

“We measure severity in cold fronts by looking at the pressure gradient, and [this weekend’s cold front] does look like it could have some strong winds associated with it,” Ms Lingard said

“There are no warnings issued for it yet as it’s too far away, but that may change as we get towards the end of the week.”

Showers are expected to continue into Thursday, before briefly easing on Friday.

That’s not the end of it though, as it swings back on the weekend with up to 25mm predicted to fall on Saturday alone.

According to the BoM, rainfall has been well below average this month as of the May 26. We’ve only had 11.8mm compared to the average of 85.5mm.

While we have been enjoying the last few weeks of nice sunshiny weather, Lingard says the farmers are keen for some wet weather.

“The farmers of Southwest WA are desperate for some rainfall, and we are very keen to deliver that over the next week,” she said.

The Bureau of Meteorology is continuing to monitor the developing systems with forecasts set to update later in the week.
