A popular Mosman Park skate bowl has been temporarily filled with sand after it was deemed unsafe, sparking outrage from local parents.

The Mosman Park Council turned the Mann Oval skate bowl into a sandpit this week, after it was assessed to be a safety hazard, due to cracks and damaged coatings.

More than 90 comments from disgruntled locals have been posted about the issue into a Facebook group titled ‘Everything Mosman Park’.

Local resident Olivia Pushkine said the skate bowl is one of the most used in the area by families and school-children and hopes the council will backtrack on its actions.

“Hopefully soon the dirty sand will be removed and the skate bowl will be updated and returned,” she said.

Other Facebook group members shared Ms Pushkine’s frustration, with one commenter describing the sandpit as ‘an eyesore’ and  ‘a waste of ratepayers money.’

Another said: “my children cried when they found out, as they can’t play on their bikes at the park anymore.”

Mosman Park deputy mayor Georgie Carey said the decision to fill in the skate bowl was a temporary solution to make use of the space while it was unsafe to skate.

“The Town attempted to repair and paint the skate bowl but due to its age and concrete deterioration, it was not possible in time and was deemed unsafe,” Mrs Carey said.

“The decision was made to create temporary urban beach while we contact skate park experts to determine possible solutions,” she said.

Mrs Carey said plans are already underway to have the skate bowl refurbished and back for use.

“We are currently in contact with Skate Park experts to scope costing to bring back the skate bowl,” she said.
